Innovative materials, Working Group 2

Working Group calling notice, “Innovative materials and Sustainability”

The world’s climate and environment are changing. At the same time, creativity and innovation in materials, products and rail vehicles are never ending. All these continue to challenge the fire engineer and fire services, the understanding of fire behaviour and fire-fighting. So we should be active in trying to understand how all of this will impact the fire and railway industry.

This working group will:

Develop insight and inform members of new materials and their application;
Monitor the revisions of BS 45545, NFPA 130 and BS 9992 in terms of material requirements;
Review the source of the materials used and their carbon footprints;
Promote fire safety as a sustainable railways discipline;
Promote education and training for our members of RIFA as well as apprentices and STEM initiatives.

I have launched a members’ VIMEO channel within which information gained can be shared. Members wishing to join the Group and benefit from viewing the channel, please email me. The VIMEO channel web address is
